TAD 2011 – Thing 2

February 2nd, 2011 · crafty, Thing-A-Day, Uncategorized

Working on a photo album in iPhoto. Having a newborn at home makes crafting a challenge. But when he’s napping in my arms I can usually get a hand free to work on something. Today I started the project and got the cover and first page done.

Ear infections, nursing strikes and scream, oh my!

February 1st, 2011 · Daily Scream, Family, Snarf

So yesterday I took Snarf to see the doctor because I felt a tiny lump on his head behind his right ear. He also hadn’t been eating well (breastfeeding).

Dr. Cindy gave him a thorough exam and determined that the lumps are his lymph nodes, indicating an infection. So she checked his ears and they didn’t look too bad. It seems we may have caught the infection in the early stage.

I don’t know where he got an ear infection from. It’s either a side effect of the Prilosec or a side affect of reflux. I’ll have to ask Dr. Cindy what she thinks. Which came first, the chicken or the egg.

Not wanting to put an 11 week old on antibiotics, she sent us home with a home remedy and instructions to call back if his symptoms got worse.

The home remedy is to slice and heat two cloves of garlic in a half cup of olive oil. When cool, using an eye dropper, drop some into the ear canal and wait a minute. The batch of garlic oil is good for two days at room temperature.

So now we have a garlic scented Snarf Baby. He did breast feed during the night feeds and early morning. But by 11am the strike began again.

For now we are pumping and bottle feeding after giving a good attempt at breastfeeding.

Step 1: Get baby to sleep.

Step 2: Get crafty. The dog always helps.

Step 3: Make something quick before the baby wakes up.

I got hands!

January 31st, 2011 · Snarf

Reducing the daily scream one hand at a time!

So last night Dad was putting Snarf to sleep. After almost 2 hours of rocking and singing he set him down in the crib and took a quick break. Upon his return he noticed that lil’ Snarf had wiggled his way out of the swaddle, slurping on his hands just as happy as can be. This is a new development!!!! Watching from the monitor, we let him lay there hoping he’d put himself to sleep. That didn’t happen but when we noticed him starting to get a little fussy Dad went up and re-swaddled him. With in minutes of holding him he was out like a light.

We’ve also noticed that he is slurping on his hands (and ours) a lot! He’s only 11 weeks old. I don’t know if he’s teething yet. My mom says both my brother and I had our first tooth by 3 months so I guess it’s possible. Either way, the scream has been considerably less since his hand to mouth coordination has developed.
